Description

In this advanced lesson, the students will learn about unusual real laws from different countries and examine why these laws might exist. They will practice expressing opinions, comparing cultures, and defending their viewpoints with reasoning and examples. The goal is to improve critical thinking, global awareness, and advanced speaking fluency through discussion of fascinating legal differences.

2: Have you ever heard a law that sounded crazy?

3: If you could make a law, what would it be?

1: Singapore - Chewing Gum: Selling and importing gum is banned to keep public spaces clean. Do you think banning chewing gum is reasonable? Would you follow this law?

2: Milan, Italy - Smiling Rule: People are encouraged to smile in public except at funerals or hospitals. Why do you think Milan created this rule? Should governments tell people how to behave in public?

3: Switzerland - Toilet Rule: In some apartments, flushing toilets late at night is illegal to respect quiet hours. Do you think noise rules like this are important? How would you feel if your bathroom use was restricted?

4: Turin, Italy - Dog Walking Law: Dog owners must walk their dogs regularly or pay a fine. Do you think this law is fair? Should governments enforce pet care rules?

5: Georgia, USA (Quitman) - Chicken Crossing: Chickens cannot cross the road; owners must control them. Why might this law exist? Does it make sense in modern society?

6: Thailand - Money Respect: Stepping on money is illegal/disrespectful because it features the king’s image. Do you think symbolic laws like this are important?

7: Philippines - Flag Respect: Disrespecting or misusing the national flag is illegal. Why do you think countries protect their flags? Do you think such laws are important?

8: France - Pig Named Napoleon: It’s illegal to name a pig “Napoleon” to protect the dignity of the historical figure. Do you think laws about respecting historical figures are important? Explain.

9: Switzerland - Guinea Pig Companionship: It’s illegal to keep just one guinea pig because they must have a companion. Do you think animals should have laws to protect their social needs?
